Irish History Revealed - In the nineteenth century, Irish lace became one of the most sought-after luxury goods in the world. It was made in the most unlikely places. Irish lacemaking as a cottage industry took hold during and after the Famine years, introduced in many areas by nuns and philanthropists who recognized that it could provide income for women and families with almost no materials or capital required beyond thread, a pillow, and time.
